Urban Fabric

In our ongoing project, Social Weavers, our goal is to break the divide between artists and craft artisans and, in the process, create a system to learn from each other’s strengths and knowledge, creating a pathway for the development of a new community centered sustainable design practice that supports individual expression, crafting histories and future livelihood. This project, currently based in India, creates collaborative platforms for working with traditional hand loom weavers to co-create woven sarees, which is an unstitched clothing and a ‘one size fits all’. The colours and designs are influenced by the landscapes of both India and California. The sarees are woven using organic cotton and dyed in natural vegetable dyes and the surface designs hold the narratives of our process and of our collaborators.

As we know, through our research, Bangalore had a vibrant handloom weaving community that was slowly taken over by power looms because of the economic viability. The few surviving ones are in small pockets in other parts of Karnataka.

Through our installation for Urban Fabric, we would like to comment upon the hope of a revival of the handlooms in Bangalore. Through the materials we have used to create the sarees, organic cotton and natural dyes, we would also like to comment upon the use of our land for a better well-being.
